White German Shepherd
The White colored German Shepherd
dog has been around since the beginning of the German Shepherd breed.
In the late 1960's they decided the German Shepherd dog should consist of rich
colors so the white color was made
a disqualifing fault in the standard, which ment that people could breed
the dogs, but they could not show in AKC conformation events.
The white color does not cause any health related problems in German
Shepherds. The white dogs are no different than their colored friends.
In fact, you can have both white and colored dogs in the same litter if
the parents both carry for white, which like black is a recessive gene,
and if at least one or both parent(s) is a colored dog. Meaning, both parents
have to carry for white to produce it.
People have been involved with the white colored German Shepherd dogs since
the start of the breed. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge,
was one of the breeders who adored whites. When the color became a dq fault
the White German Shepherd fanciers developed their own clubs
to promote these dogs, such as
AWSA
(The
American White Shepherd Association).
In hopes that someday the breed could be split from the
German Shepherd standard and could be a breed of its own. There have been
other color splits in other breeds in the AKC in the past.
Currently, the White Shepherd is registered as a White Shepherd
with the American White Shepherd Association (AWSA)
and the United Kennel Club (UKC), and as a German Shepherd with the AKC and
the UKC.
